Five Tips for Restoring Office Mojo

In times of uncertainty (and let’s face it, we’re in one now), keeping the office vibes high and light can be a challenge. However, it’s a necessity as it directly impacts morale and productivity. With the right approach, you can foster a positive work environment and keep spirits high even during tough times. Here are our top five tips:

1. Communicate.

Transparent communication builds trust and reduces uncertainty. Even if you don't have all the answers, acknowledging the situation can go a long way. Remember, communication is a two-way street. Make your team feel heard by encouraging them to share their concerns, ideas, and feedback.

2. Stay curious.

In an increasingly complex business world, curiosity is the virtue that gives rise to exceptional leaders and HR practitioners. Curiosity enables us to ask questions, stay open, be flexible, and commit to ongoing learning. As such, curiosity leads to continual personal growth, which will positively affect your people and organisation. It enables us to uncover challenges, check biases, unlock the potential of our team members, and adapt quickly to change.

3. Empathy as an imperative.

Empathy impacts wellbeing and makes good business sense, affecting everything from creativity and innovation to retention. Empathetic leaders cultivate resilient and inclusive workplaces. But beyond the business metrics is the very real fact that empathy positively influences emotional wellbeing. With mental health challenges on the rise, empathy is no longer a “soft skill” but rather a leadership imperative.

4. Just be kind.

Some simple ways to be kind at work include celebrating birthdays and other important events, inviting coworkers to lunch, helping an overwhelmed employee with a deadline, and simply smiling and asking, “How are you?”. Kindness goes beyond the standard, “My door is always open”, and urges leaders to actually talk to their people.

5. Have fun.

Organise team-building activities, happy hours, or themed events to lighten the mood and boost morale. Fun activities help foster a sense of camaraderie. And, as they say, sometimes laughter is the best medicine.

A final note.

Maintaining high morale during uncertain times requires effort and dedication, but it's essential. As we’ve said before, in times of uncertainty, people are the only certainty. So, we must, must, look after our people.
